CHAPTER 35

“You ingrate!” Rancher Clem Hoolahan slammed his big fist on the oak desk in his office.  “I picked you up out-a the dirt.  I gave you food and a place to put your sorry head.”

“Yes, Sir, you did that,” Chad Sparrow said, looking straight ahead.  “But Sheriff Ball has offered me a good paying job, and it could have some kind of future.  Now, you can’t blame me for wanting that, can you?”

“Ha, you just want to lallygag around town.”  Clem raised his voice in a high falsetto.  “Just wanna hang around the ladies.  You think you’re some kind of ladies man.  I seen you, making moony eyes at that dress-making gal.  You mark my words, Boy, she’s  gonna turn out tho be a whore like all the rest of ‘em.”

“Mr. Hoolahan, Sir, you don’t have any call to talk about her like that.  I’ll just take my pay and go.”

“Take your pay?  Why I gave you room and board for nigh on to three months.  What makes you think I owe you anything more?”

Chad Sparrow took a deep breath.  “Well, Sir, we had an agreement …”

“Oh yeah, well I don’t see no contract.  You can’t prove nothing, so what’re you gonna do, Mr. Big-shot? “

The corner of Chad’s mouth tightened, and a cold gleam shone in his eyes.  “Well Sir, as the newly-hired Deputy Sheriff, I would strongly recommend you not try to find out.”
