“Hello? Hello? Charlotte, this Elizabeth Amanda, I guess you’ve gotten one of those new answering machines. I don’t think those are going to catch on. Anyway, I really need to talk to you. I’m afraid things are starting to get bad. I haven’t seen or heard from Clive in almost three weeks and the bank is threatening to put the house on auction next week if he doesn’t show up and make a payment on the mortgage.
“Oh Charlotte, I just don’t know what to do. I’m ashamed to even walk into the Hinky-Dinky, I feel like all the checkout ladies are laughing at me. The power company is threatening to shut off my lights, and I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to keep my phone.
“I wish I could get ahold of you, it would mean so much if we could just go out to lunch like we used to. Have you and Martin gone out of town? Well, I guess I’ll try again tomorrow. I miss you, Charlotte, please give me a call when you get home. Bye.”
Charlotte Withholt pressed the delete button on her new machine, careful not to chip her Orange Cream nails. It was a good thing Martin had agreed to have one of the new-fangled things. It was easier to avoid people with unsavory circumstances.
